How do I share my testimony? It’s a common question in church settings, but we rarely take the time to answer it clearly. Even worse, as a pastor, I’ve often encouraged church members to share their testimony without knowing whether they’re equipped to do so. Why? Because as Christians, we take for granted that everyone knows how to give or share their testimony. If you don’t know where to start or how to structure your testimony, allow me to offer a few simple guidelines.
When I think about someone sharing their testimony, I’m reminded of Jesus’ words in Luke 8:39: “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
This man was able to share his personal experience (his testimony) of what Jesus had done for him. Being able to clearly express how you’ve encountered Christ and what he has done for you can be one of the most powerful ways to help others understand the Good News, for them to also believe.
The following information and downloadable resource is designed to help you write out and share your testimony. When starting out, your testimony should be about 3–5 minutes long. While you might be encouraged to shorten or lengthen, this is a good starting time.
Three Key Parts to Your Testimony
Take time to write out your story. Write it in a way that someone else could read and understand it clearly. A good first draft is about one paragraph per section, just a few sentences is enough to start:
1. Describe your life before you received Christ.
This is good chance to share your mindset, your struggles, or what you were searching for before you met Jesus. What motivated you? What felt missing? You don’t need to share every detail just enough to give a clear picture.
2. Explain how and why you chose to follow Christ. (Your salvation moment)
Describe what drew you to Jesus. What did you come to believe about Him? How did you confess and receive Him as Lord and Savior? (See Romans 10:9–10.) You might even include the words you prayed. This part helps others understand how they, too, can put their trust in Christ.
3. Describe how your life has changed since knowing Christ. (Remember your story isn’t finished and God is still at work in you.)
What’s different now? Has your perspective on life, or your problems, shifted? Where has Jesus brought growth, healing, or hope? Be honest about what you’re still learning or wrestling with. Your story doesn’t have to be perfect, just real.
Helpful Hints for Writing Your Testimony:
- Keep Jesus at the center. Your story is powerful because of what He has done, not what you have done.
- If you accepted Christ at a young age, your “before” may not be dramatic…and that’s okay. Focus on how your relationship with Christ has grown since.
- Be real. Don’t exaggerate, embellish, or pretend to be someone you’re not. Authenticity is powerful.
- Details matter, but only real ones. Be specific where it helps the story come alive, but stay truthful.
- Limit Scripture to one or two key verses. Verses about eternal life can be especially meaningful.
- Finish with warmth. You might simply say, “Thank you for listening.” You could also ask, “Do you have any questions?” or even, “Would you like to believe and confess Christ today?”
- Keep it concise. A clear, focused story is easier to follow and more impactful.
- Avoid making the Christian life sound too easy. Be honest about your ongoing struggles. Faith isn’t about perfection, but transformation.
- Once you’ve written your testimony, spend time praying through it. You’ll be ready to share it with anyone at any time!
Try practicing with a Christian friend, a parent, or a pastor, and ask for honest feedback. See if your message is coming across clearly. Remember, your story might be the very thing God uses to lead someone else to faith in Jesus Christ.
